Mavericks are tokens that have not been identified with a particular town. For the purpose of this page, Mavericks will be those not yet associated with a State. If the State is known but not the town those Mavericks will be listed under the State name as a Maverick from that State.
1. The Climax / Good for 5c in Trade/ Nickel / Round
I thought I had read there once was a saloon by this name in Colorado but I wasn't able to
find any information to support that notion. I did however find a handful of saloons sporting
the name "Climax".
In 1876 Big Jim Pendergast opened the Climax Saloon on Saint Louis Ave, Kansas City, Missouri.
In 1887 there was a Climax Saloon located at 210 Fourth Ave., Nashville, Tennessee and
another located in Chattanooga.
In 1903 Caruthersville, Missouri had a saloon named Climax.
Lastly, Birmingham Alabama, date unknown, had 3 saloons located within the city so named.
Update: May 6, 2010 - I received the following information regarding the Climax token from John DiBella:
“The Climax” is a listed token. You may find this hard to believe but this token is from San Juan, Puerto Rico and is listed and pictured in Catalogo Numismatico De Puerto Rico (1990) by Efrain Archilla-Diaz as EA 809.
2. Crystal Palace Saloon / 209 East Overland - GOOD FOR ONE BEER
This Brass Maverick measures 21MM and was submitted by David Boudreau.
There is an East Overland Avenue in El Paso, TX. Could this be where this token is from?
3. GARIBALDI SALOON TOKEN. Measures 7/8 inches in diameter & is metal.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this token? I found this token in 1992 or 1993 at a Scout Camp located on a ranch in the northern part of Bexar County, Texas, near San Antonio. The Boy Scout camp was in operation from the 1940’s to the 1970’s. The ranch is now in the early stages of development for building homes. I suspect that the Garibaldi Saloon could have been in the San Antonio area. Any information about the Garibaldi Saloon or this token would be much appreciated. Thank you, Fred Kelley

This token was found at the former site of a Stage Drop and later a Railroad depot in Hearne, TX.
In 1910 there was a newspaper ad in Milam, TX for an Eagle Saloon.
8. Star Saloon/Good for 5c in Trade/At Bar / Back is Blank
